Four (Science - Backed) Benefits Of A Great Work Social Life

Social

When moving to a new job, we are often re-building or adding to our work friendship network and this can be daunting. For those of us who are relocating to a new city, alongside a good culture, the ability to build friendship circles are equally important.

It's reported that people living in cities are more likely to feel alone, with London taking the No.1 spot. In today's market where candidates can receive multiple offers, a great work social life plays a big part of the decision-making process and for a good reason too, with science-backed benefits of making friends at work:

1. Increased happiness

Annie McKee, the author of How To Be Happy At Work, says building workplace friendships is one of the primary ways to boost happiness and fulfilment at work - and The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which followed 724 men for 79 years, found that relationships dramatically affect our happiness in life. They also discovered that the quality of relationships matters more than quantity.

2. Less stress

Shawn Achor, the author of The Happiness Advantage, discovered that social connection is one of the greatest predictors not only of happiness but also of reduced stress. Those who survive stress the best are the people who actually increase their social investments under stress, instead of withdrawing as most of us do.

3. Increased motivation

A study by the Society for Human Resource Management found relationships with co-workers were the top driver of employee engagement - 77% of participants cited them as a priority. Professors at Rutgers University in the US have also found that work friendships actually boost your performance.

4. Better physical health

According to the Mayo Clinic, a strong social report reduces your risk of many serious health problems, including depression, high blood pressure and an unhealthy body mass index (BMI), and can even extend your life.

Forming relationships when joining a new company can be intimidating, so it’s important to find a workplace that encourages social connections. At Projectus Consulting, we understand the importance of building good relationships with the people we work alongside. Not only do we have a free bar and barista (to support the coffee catch up), we also get together at quarterly social events, monthly lunch clubs, along with celebrating success at Michelin Star big biller lunches throughout the year.
