Why the Passion for Orthopaedic Technology?

I'm fascinated by the medical device sector. After all, it's where life and technology meet!

Why the Passion for Orthopaedic Technology?

Orthopaedic healthcare isn’t restricted to particular ages or health stats we figure we’we will somehow dodge. We will all likely rely on the expertise within orthopaedics at any age during our lifetime. Orthopaedics of course, refers to surgery involving the musculoskeletal system aka the “movement system.”

Some of the most common aliments you will need orthopaedic treatment for includes:

  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Torn ligaments, sprains, and strains
  • Tendon injuries & pulled muscles
  • Arthritis and osteoporosis
  • Ruptured disks & low back pain

Orthopaedic medical devices include implants such as hip, knee & trauma fixation devices, orthobiologics & the power tools used in these surgeries. Interestingly however, developments in nonsurgical techniques are growing fast much to the delight of patients across the globe.

Medical Device Industry Gossip.

Zimmer have finally completed their $14 billion merger with Biomet creating the new aptly named major player in orthopaedics, Zimmer Biomet. The global orthopaedic market is estimated at $45 billion. This merger means Zimmer Biomet will have a broadened product portfolio with huge market share.

This market domination meant Zimmer Biomet had to sell products to Lima Corp to prevent a monopoly on products. Great news for Lima, this should enable the company to enjoy steep growth in the UK if they are successfully able to consolidate these new products.

Our Senior Orthopaedic Consultant Simon Broadway recently sat in on orthopaedic surgery in action! He shares his experience below.

“ I head up the Orthopaedic Division at Projectus Consulting. I’ve got a degree in sports science & always had an interest in Orthopaedics & the body.

I recently organised a day’s shadowing with an Orthopaedic Territory Sales Manager. I got the exciting opportunity to scrub up and watch a total knee replacement surgery in action! It was an amazing experience from the phenomenal use of med-tech, to the gore & human surgical precision.

Seeing how much the surgeon/scrub nurse relies on the procedure & product knowledge of the territory manager, really expanded my understanding of how to recruit intelligently within the orthopaedic arena.

As well, having a full day in theatre has given me a better comprehensive understanding of theatre experience.“

Here are a few emerging orthopaedic technologies to look out for:

  • Arthrex 4K System producing ultra-clear imaging equipment
  • Conformis 3D printed custom knee implants
  • Primia Spines TOP’s Lumbar Spinal fusion; allowing natural spine movement
